Isn't it funny how times change but some things don't? Gambling used to be illegal in South Africa so people got very inventive as to how one could continu to play and gamble. From what was known back then as "Joints", (somebodies flat or at the back of a tea room) or "Bridge clubs", (where Bridge was played in the front of the club whilst at the back we used to play Poker and Portuguese Rummy). |

I have found that most gamblers are extremely superstitious and their superstitions range from funny to strange to absolutely weird. Some of the superstitions relate to items that you wear or items that you carry. Some gamblers have a lucky shirt, a pendant, sunglasses or even the colour of a clothing item which could be considered to be lucky. Other gamblers carry lucky tokens such as a rabbits foot, a lucky coin, a lucky chip from a casino or even a lucky stone such as a tigers eye. Lady gamblers also consider certain shoes or a handbag to be a lucky token. |
